Welcome! Living with the Word is a place to explore the Bible from the perspective of the Roman Catholic Lectionary. I’ve found that Scripture keeps me grounded and centered in my faith. The Word speaks in different ways at different times, always new, always challenging, always reminding me of who and Whose I am. The lectionary ensures that we encounter all of Scripture and not just those texts that are familiar and comfortable.
My name is Diane M. Houdek. For almost 30 years, I’ve been writing and editing in the Catholic press. Since 1992 I’ve been with Franciscan Media in Cincinnati, Ohio. From 1986 to 2011 I was a contributor to Homily Helps and Weekday Homily Helps. I edited the latter publication from 1995-2011. For 12 years I also edited Scripture From Scratch with Virginia Smith and Elizabeth McNamer. This blog began as a digital companion to Bringing Home the Word. I have written Advent and Lent reflections for Catholic Update, as well as two books, Lent With St. Francis and Advent With St. Francis. My newest book, due out in August 2014, is Pope Francis and Our Call to Joy. As part of my job as Digital Editor for Franciscan Media, I blog regularly at the American Catholic Blog.
Originally from Wisconsin, I have an Honors BA in English and History from Marquette University and an MA in English Literature from Northwestern University. I have also studied Scripture at the Athenaeum of Ohio.
